Known for his honest, detail-oriented approach, Bing shares what drives his design philosophy, how he crafted a space that feels more like a home than a studio, and why starting with the foundation always matters most.

Can you introduce yourself and what you do?

I’m Bing, an interior designer for over 10 years and founder of Rubiks Studio. At Rubiks, we’re not a one-size-fits-all firm — we customise everything based on our client’s needs and lifestyle. That’s why the first meeting is so important to us. It’s where we listen, understand, and start shaping the vision together.

For me, it’s never been about the money. I focus a lot on the outcome, on crafting a home that truly reflects each client. What drives me is when clients come back and say, “Wow, this is beyond what I imagined.” That sense of fulfilment and achievement is something I really cherish.

There’s a recent client who told me that I was the 14th designer they met — and they chose me because my layout approach was so different. That’s exactly the kind of experience I strive to create: thoughtful, unexpected, and personal.

In two sentences, what’s the story behind your studio?

Rubiks was inspired by the Rubik’s Cube — how every twist leads to a colourful, unique outcome. I started this studio because I wanted both my clients and myself to enjoy the creative process, and not just follow cookie-cutter designs from the market.

How do you think the founding of Rubiks is represented in the interior design of this studio space?

I didn’t want our studio to feel like a typical commercial ID firm. Instead of flashy feature walls, I focused on raw, natural elements — like using real tree trunks and stone for our vanity area. Even the way we organise our samples is intentional, creating a homely and thoughtful space that reflects the creative spirit behind Rubiks.

Tell us about the favourite textural colours and finishes you particularly enjoy working with.

For colour, I would say earth tones — they are timeless and grounding, which is why I love using them in my designs. I enjoy working with textures too. While I like minimalist styles, I don’t like walls to feel too flat or overly planned. So I like to test and play with different material — like rock-textured finishes or wallpapers — to create more layers and depth in a space.

What is your material moodboard like for this space?

My showroom is the material mood board. Instead of relying on Photoshop, I style real corners in the studio to show clients exactly how their future home could feel. Each corner tells a story — it’s all about letting them experience the design in real life, not just on screen.

Wallhub’s products played a huge role in bringing the studio’s look together. I’m a big believer that walls, ceilings, and floors are the foundation of any space — they set the entire tone. I often tell my clients you can skip built-ins, but never compromise on textures. In your eyes, what makes a space well designed?

To me, a well-designed space starts with a strong foundation — walls, floors, and textures set the base. I avoid curves or flashy fixtures, preferring minimalist lighting that feels subtle when off but clearly brightens when on. I always advise clients to keep ceilings simple and white — so the focus stays on the design, not the lights themselves.

Given all the foundation that you have mentioned, where do you usually look for inspirations.

When I’m out of ideas, I turn to travel for inspiration. I love immersing myself in architecture and interiors wherever I go, soaking up the vibe of each space. Even if I can’t travel far, I find calm by walking in nature — something you can see reflected in my use of natural materials like stone. One of my most memorable trips was spending a month in Hokkaido, Japan, learning to snowboard. Being surrounded by quiet snowy hills really helped me appreciate the balance between nature and energy, which inspires how I design spaces that feel both calming and alive.

What’s your take on today’s interior design trends?

Design trends come and go, and it’s fascinating to see how quickly they evolve — especially online. Curved walls, for instance, have been popular for quite some time now. While I appreciate trends like these, I usually incorporate them only when clients request them — often for safety or family-friendly reasons. Personally, I prefer timeless designs that last beyond trends. That said, I never say no to my clients. If they love something, I’ll find a way to make it both beautiful and functional. It’s all about trust — they share their vision, and I bring it to life.

What is one practical tip for homeowners styling or renovating their space?

One practical tip I always share is: trust your designer, and stick to neutral foundations. I love bold colours like yellow and green too — but I usually keep them to paint, cushions, or decor. For key elements like flooring, walls, and cabinetry, neutral tones like grey, black, or white are timeless and versatile. With the right base, you can always restyle or layer as your taste evolves.
